Technique Blog Hoppin’ with “Botanicals”

Published by at 10:01 pm under Blog Hop,Gina K Designs,Tutorials

Hello everyone!  I’m back from a week of fabulous fellowship & company of treasured friends, plus an amazing experience of working the annual Great American Scrapbook Convention in Arlington, TX.   Now it’s time to get my feet back on the ground for some delightful blog hopping with Gina K. Designs!   This time, our blog hop will be featuring a variety of techniques, showcasing one of my favorite stamp sets from the recent Gina K. release …. “Botanicals”.

I’ve chosen to use the “Cracked Glass” technique.  Honestly, the inspiration for this technique occurred during the recent scrapbook convention, as I witnessed an accident during which someone’s watch crystal was shattered.  What did I “see”?  Cracked glass … in the literal sense.  What else could I do, but get out my UTEE (ultra thick embossing enamel) and start ‘cracking‘!

The ‘Cracked Glass’ technique gives the appearance of a cracked picture frame glass over the chosen image.  How?  Follow these simple steps and give it a try!

  • Stamp image & “finish” or color as desired.

  • Completely cover image with Embossing Ink (or Versamark).

  • Cover with UTEE or any clear embossing powder.  You’ll need a thicker coating than typically used in standard heat embossing, so …

  • Heat the UTEE until melted.

  • Quickly cover again with another coating of UTEE.

  • Heat until melted and smooth.

  • I chose to use 3 coatings of UTEE for this project.

  • Place your embossed image piece into the freezer for a couple of minutes.

  • Remove and gently bend the piece back until the UTEE forms little cracks.  Repeat as many times as you like.

  • When cracked to your satisifaction, sponge over the cracks with dye ink.  (I chose Antique Linen … but experiment with your choice of colors!)

  • Use a paper towel to wipe the top of the cracked glass.  The cracks will be more noticeable due to the inking, for an aged appearance.  This step is optional, if you prefer the clean look of the cracking without added color.

~I’ve added Glimmer Mist to the card and ribbon for a subtle elegance.  This ribbon was white, until I sponged it with Mustard Seed ink (to coordinate with the ink on the image).  After inking, the ribbon was misted with Glimmer Mist and allowed to quickly dry while hanging beneath the ceiling fan.  Once dry, the ribbon was tied around the card, and the tag was added with natural thread.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this project and technique!  Thanks oh so much for stopping by today!  (Pssssssssssssst!  Later in the week, I’ll share pics & stories of the convention!)  The rest of the design team have many more ideas to share as well!
